Giving by text may be going nowhere, but the explosion of smart phones is completely changing the mobile giving math.

Many iphone and Android toters are using their phones — or tablets — as laptop replacements for such workaday tasks as reading email, surfing the web, shopping — and giving.

According to at least one study, as much as 20 percent of some charities’ online donations are being thumbed in via mobile devices. And here’s the rub — half of the people who attempt to complete a donation on their Galaxies or iPhones bail out before completing the transaction.

So do this now: Take out your credit card and your smartphone, hand them to a loved one and ask them to make a $10 donation to your organization. Take notes. Best ten bucks you’ll ever spend.

P.S. Text to give looks to be circling the drain. More on that soon…
